DESIGN AS ART & SCIENCE

BRINGING NUANCE, BEAUTY, AND STRATEGY TO INTERIORS.

Whenever our team embarks on a new project, we approach it from the perspective of experimentation and discovery.

Of course, we all have a background knowledge of the technical necessities: knowledge of code, and the boundaries that are part of every space we design. But we also have a deeply rooted philosophy that design is a marriage of both art and science. You can’t have one without the other.

THE SCIENCE.

When we take on the design of an entire home or business, we understand it to be a process of invention. There are technicalities that must be addressed. There are experiments – with both successes and failures. There are x and y factors that interact with one another as we move from one phase of the project to the next.

We always tell our clients at the start of every project – “this process will involve discovery.” We work to develop a set of expectations that allow for us to move and change certain elements as we go.

THE ART.

Though there are rules that must be followed and experimentation with certain variables in place, there is also room for feeling, intuition, and pushing conceptual boundaries. We work with our clients to understand the nuance and the “why” behind every interior goal. We ask questions to provoke thought and make you think not just about finishes in your kitchen (for example), but about your life and the way you exist and engage with your space.

The artistic process happens when we make room for thoughtfulness and this process requires time and space for ideas to settle.

BRINGING ART + SCIENCE TOGETHER.

What we want every one of our clients to understand is that you can’t have one without the other. Whether your project is big or small, home or workspace, minimal or eclectic – we need to bring together intuition + thoughtfulness with practicalities + experimentation.

Interior design isn’t just about making spaces pretty. It’s about creating spaces that make sense, are functional, are safe and fit with your goals and worldview. We will always lead and guide you throughout the experience but we will also ask hard questions. We’ll challenge you to think beyond your inspo board and to join us when we come up against barriers in your project.

WHY IT MATTERS.

Understanding the art + science of interior design allows you as the client to come into your project with an open mind – to allow for experimentation and changes that come with every interior space design. We want you to feel empowered as well as supported and guided throughout the process. We want to help you see the bigger picture when it comes to your project and not sweat the small stuff. Most importantly, we want to bring you along on a design journey that pushes boundaries and leaves room for experimentation along the way.
